Elliot, Age 2

Elliot was diagnosed with PKU at 6 days old. He is a happy, energetic and loving 2 year old. We are fortunate enough to have formula currently provided to us by the state, although this is not guaranteed to continue nor is it available in every state should we need to move. Our insurance does not cover any amount of medical foods. Without medical nutrition coverage our son will be extremely limited in the foods that he can safely consume. Without medical nutrition coverage we are looking at a future of large out of pocket expenses. Without medical nutrition food coverage we face the possibility of not being able to afford to feed our child. Without coverage, our son may one day need to choose between staying on diet or paying his bills. As a mother, my biggest fear is that one day we will no longer be able to properly feed and care for our child because of the immense costs of insurance, formula, and medical foods. Medical nutrition coverage would allow us to provide our son with all of the resources he needs, and it will allow him to remain on diet when he is on his own.

The Medical Nutrition Equity Act will provide key support for those Americans who rely on medical foods to survive and thrive.
