Our daughter is on my husband’s insurance which we consider to be good medical insurance through UHC. We however did try to contact them about receiving coverage for medical foods without any success. We thankfully are in a state that does cover formula. Having medical foods covered for us would help her day to day life and care of PKU significantly. We do not buy a lot of specialty foods and try to find as much as we can in stores to make it cost effective. If medical foods were covered for her, we could order more often and give her a greater variety of foods. This would help immensely as she grows and needs more to fill her growing appetite. These foods tend to be much lower in phenylalanine than store bought foods so that would be a great advantage as well. Having more low protein foods readily available through medical coverage would make her PKU management much more affordable.

The Medical Nutrition Equity Act will provide key support for those Americans who rely on medical foods to survive and thrive.
